My Shropshire
My Shropshire is haunted, holy, hillforts and ancient churches, witches, hermits and coracle men. It is a messy, magnificent place, where the ghosts of miners still follow their old routes home. My Shropshire is blood and battles and death, death, death though gloominess is far to be found. My Shropshire is Marian Marks and Sheela Na Gig, Lych gates and patterns on the threshold to ward away evil. My Shropshire salutes at magpies and sweeps dirt into the hearth to keep the blessings in. My Shropshire is Iron and coal and clay, earthy, humorous and proud. My Shropshire is a wild place, of Mermaids and giants and vengeful women. It is the Devil’s place, for he lingers still in our quiet corners.
My Shropshire is ordinary folk, weaving a rich tapestry into the land. My Shropshire remembers, even when others don’t.
My Shropshire asks you to listen, and to consider what you too can learn from ordinary places.
